Jan Sole, whose smooth, comforting voice was known to WOUB radio listeners for more than 20 years, died Wednesday at Riverside Hospital in Columbus after a short illness.
"Jan was very popular among WOUB's listeners because she was so comforting," said Tim Myers, director of radio and interactive service for WOUB. "People really related to her. People felt like they knew her personally."
Sole started her career at WOUB, part of the Ohio University Center for Public Media, in the area of television programming. She delved into the radio side in the 1980s, initially by hosting a Sunday morning classical music program on WOUB-AM.
"Her voice and her presence fit with the classical format very well," Myers said.
When WOUB-FM changed to classical music format in the late '80s, Sole became more involved as a radio announcer. She also hosted several programs on arts and music.
"She became a regular on the air. People within the community knew her and associated her with WOUB," says Myers. “She will be sorely missed as a colleague and a friend."
Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home in Athens will handle arrangements.
