Eagles grant money to babysitting service

Ohio University Eastern Campus renovates childcare area with $15,000 donation

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (Jan. 30, 2007) -- Thanks to the Bridgeport Eagles, the Eagles' state headquarters - the Ohio State Aerie, and the Eagles' national headquarters - the Grand Aerie, the babysitting service at Ohio University's Eastern Campus has recently been renovated and expanded.  Through three separate grants totaling $15,000, the Eagles, whose motto is "People Helping People," are helping parents pursue their college educations.

The babysitting service, which provides care for students' and staff members' children while the parents are on campus, has acquired almost 200 square feet by knocking out a wall and expanding into what was previously a storage room.  With the extra space, the room can now be organized into different stations for the kids.  There is a quiet reading area, an arts and crafts area, a toy area, and a child-size kitchen area.

New child-friendly furniture was purchased.  This included tables, chairs, storage cupboards, little lockers for the kids, and a play loft. The play loft has become the central attraction to the kids.  It is a raised, carpeted area with railing completely around it, and two small stair-cases going up to the loft.  There are also tunnels underneath that the kids can crawl through.

There are additional items planned for the room.  Some new rugs are planned in the different learning areas.  The supervisor, Dr. Judith Bush, also hopes to buy a paging system for the parents.  This system, similar to what restaurants use for people waiting to be seated, will allow the babysitter to notify the parent that he or she is needed without the babysitter having to leave the room and go to the parent's class.

Dr. Judith Bush who has supervised the babysitting service on campus since the early 1980's said, "We are so thankful to the Eagles for their grants.  The children love their new room.  The first little boy to arrive after the renovations was so surprised and excited.  He walked around looking at everything.  He was almost speechless when he saw the new loft.  The parents are equally excited and appreciative."
