CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (April 13, 2007) -- Chemistry labs in Bennett Hall rooms 209 and 210 will be renovated this summer to provide a better learning space for Ohio University-Chillicothe students. The renovation will include new furnishings, including fume hoods, tables and floors.
This summer's renovation is the first phase of a two-phase project to improve Bennett Hall labs. The botany and biology labs in rooms 213 and 215 are slated for renovation in summer 2008.
The project to renovate the chemistry is approximately $500,000 and the source is University Outreach and Regional Campuses plant funds.
"These projects directly impact the learning environment at OU-C in a positive way. The decision on setting priorities for renovations was done in consultation with constituencies across campus including Academic Council," Campus Dean Richard Bebee said. "It was determined that renovating the labs benefits our students and directly supports and strengthens important academic offerings. These renovations bolster the STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine) areas that are gaining more focus in Ohio's educational landscape and further position our campus as a destination for students who are seeking an exceptional academic program in the sciences and mathematics."
The tentative schedule calls renovation of the chemistry labs to begin approximately June 15. To access the pipes and other infrastructure in the labs, the dean's office and the offices of his support staff will be moved, with current plans calling for room 134 to be used for this swing space. Individuals in those first-floor offices will begin moving in mid-May.
"This will cause for some inconvenience, but we are working with individuals in the affected Bennett Hall first floor administrative offices to make the transition as seamless as possible so that their inconvenience and the ability of campus offices to serve students and visitors will be maintained throughout this process," Director of Facilities Management Dave Scott said.
