ATHENS, Ohio (April 3, 2007) -- The NCAA March Madness extravaganza has seen its last game, with the Florida Gators and the Buckeyes going head to head once again. Big deal, the Ohio University Bobcats are beating both the Buckeyes and the Gators in the RecycleMania competition.
RecycleMania 2007 has now entered its final competitive week and for the first time, three out of the four NCAA Men's and Women's Final Four basketball teams are RecycleManiacs.
The Bobcats managed to secure a presence at the NCAA Final Four Festival in Atlanta by being featured in a RecycleMania video, courtesy of Coca Cola, in which Ohio and Miami Universities were shown as the founders of the competition. That's one way to get represented in the final four.
RecycleMania is an inter-collegiate competition that features waste diversion and reduction prowess. The competition currently consists of about 2 million students and thousands of faculty, staff and administrators at 200 schools across the country, representing 44 states and the District of Columbia.
Miami is a strong national competitor with their in-house recyclable collection crews and recycling processing facility where they sort mixed recyclables and trash.
The Bobcats are holding their own, but this has definitely shaped up to be a rebuilding year for Ohio University. It is in the process of re-contracting the collection of recyclables to foster higher recovery rates from trash and developing a composting facility that will target food and biodegradable service ware in time for next year's RecycleMania.
All other MAC schools competing stayed behind the Bobcats in pounds per person recycled after eight of 10 weeks. Two of Ohio University's peer schools' performances are ahead of the Bobcats in the per capita portion of the competition, with the rest trailing behind.
The competition is wrapping up, but don't rest easy. Recycling and waste reduction is a 365-day-a-year undertaking and soon students will be moving out. This is a great opportunity to reduce waste by recycling and putting out re-usables for local organizations to collect and distribute to people in need in southeastern Ohio.
