ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (Oct. 7, 2005) -- The Ohio Communication Association has named the Ohio University-Eastern chapter of the National Communication Association Student Club (NCASC) the Distinguished Student Organization of the year. The club is the largest student organization at the Eastern Campus, and received the recognition for undertaking two large projects this past year that benefited the college as well as the community.
In fall 2004, the club sponsored a series of Debate Watch events for each of the presidential debates. Members of the community and students at the Eastern Campus participated in discussions following each debate. The information gathered was sent to the National Communication Association and the Commission on Presidential Debates for research purposes.
In March 2005 the club organized Ohio University-Eastern's first Band Bash, an event where several local rock bands performed for an audience of more than 300 people. This fundraising event raised money for a game room to benefit the students at the Eastern Campus. NCASC at the Eastern Campus is being honored for coordinating the events that benefited the surrounding community, as well as at Ohio University-Eastern.
Jason Wrench is an assistant professor of communication studies at Ohio University-Eastern and the conference planner for the Ohio Communication Association. "I'm very proud of the OUE NCASC. In the two years that the Xi chapter of the NCASC has been up and running, the organization has taken on a number of extremely difficult projects and done an amazing job. I think the organization has done wonders to promote the field of communication and Ohio University-Eastern," Wrench said.
Wrench and Associate Professor of Communication Studies Sarah Mahan-Hays went to Dayton Oct. 1 to receive the award for the club. The Eastern campus actively promotes student clubs and organizations in order to enhance the university experience.
