ATHENS, Ohio (Nov. 22, 2005) -- Richard Carpinelli has been named interim vice president for student affairs at Ohio University, effective Jan. 1, 2006, Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis announced today.
He succeeds Michael J. Sostarich, who has announced his retirement effective Dec. 31. Sostarich was appointed to his current position in June 2000 after serving as the interim vice president for student affairs since 1998. He has been with the university since 1971.
Carpinelli is associate vice president for student affairs and director of Baker University Center, a position he has held since August 2003.
Carpinelli has a strong and broad background in student affairs. He was previously assistant vice president for student affairs from 2000 to 2003, interim assistant to the vice president for student affairs from 1998 to 2000 and director of University Judiciaries from 1986 to 2000. From 1984 to 1986, he was a member of the Residence Life staff. Carpinelli was recognized by the university with a 1996-1997 Outstanding Administrator Award.
"Respected by his colleagues, Rich is known for bringing together people with diverse talents and backgrounds to achieve a common goal. This talent has been evident in the leadership he has provided in the design and function of the new University Center, which is scheduled to open in January 2007," Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis said. "During this interim period, Rich is the ideal leader to guide the Division of Student Affairs as it works to provide a successful college experience for all of our students."
Carpinelli earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Slippery Rock University and a master's degree in college student personnel from Ohio University in 1987. A native of Pompton Plains, N.J., he joined the university in 1984.
"I am excited about the opportunity to assume this leadership position in the Student Affairs Division at Ohio University," Carpinelli said. "We have an outstanding team of very talented, dedicated staff, and I look forward to working with my colleagues in student affairs and across campus to continue to provide an exceptional learning environment for Ohio University students."
He and his wife, Joni, have two children, Catherine and Chris.
A national search will be held for a permanent appointment, with the expectation of filling the position by July 1, 2006. Carpinelli has chosen not to be considered as a candidate for the permanent position. The Division of Student Affairs is focused on a mission that prepares students to be responsible and contributing members of a diverse, global society by providing learning-centered environments, meaningful out-of-class opportunities and professional support services that help them learn through their experience and achieve academic success.
