Recycling takes on a whole new meaning for Ohio University

ATHENS, Ohio (May 10, 2006) -- Ohio University Facilities Management has saved seven trees of the nine cut down during construction for the new residence hall on South Green. Eighty to ninety percent of all the trees cut down on the 735 acre campus have been recycled.

The trees are now in the form of wood chips or mulch and used in the recreational facilities, as well as replanted within the golf course. The recycled trees have also been milled in the lumber yard and donated to Ohio University Printing Services.

"Ohio University Facilities Management is very conscientious about using and saving as many resources that are collected during the construction processes around the Ohio University campus," Director of Building and Grounds Services Steve Mack said. "More than $6,000 worth of wood products have been used by recycling these trees."

Economics professor Jan Palmer facilitated the partnership that Ohio University Facilities Management has with the printing services. Palmer negotiated with local craftsman during the brainstorming of the new university student center to allow the recycling of the large number of removed trees to go towards the creation of customized Ohio University wooden gifts for faculty members and alumni.

"We donate a portion of the proceeds made from these printing to replant trees throughout the campus. We are very grateful for the donated trees and we want to contribute towards this really important cause," Director of Printing Services Dave Kasler explained.

Ohio University supervises an aggressive recycling and solid waste management service for all residence halls and general funding buildings, renovation/construction projects and special events.

Beautification of the entire campus is an ongoing challenge, but Ohio University is striving to prepare comfortable and pleasing surroundings for their resident student and faculty population.
