ATHENS, Ohio (May 1, 2006) -- Ohio University Associate Vice President for Safety and Risk Management Dale Tampke announced that Associate Director/Assistant Chief of Police Mark Mathews has been promoted to interim chief of police for Ohio University's Department of Campus Safety effective May 1.
Mathews replaces Tony Camechis, who retired April 30 after 13 years of service at Ohio University and more than 30 years of work in law enforcement. Camechis was named chief of police in July 2003 and has worked at the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Athens Police Department.
Mathews, a Toledo, Ohio, native, was hired at Ohio University as a patrol officer in May 1992 before being promoted to assistant chief of police in December 2002, assistant director in December 2003 and associate director in August 2004. He earned his bachelor's degree in criminology from Ohio University in 1992.
"I appreciate the quality of leadership that Tony Camechis has given Ohio University," said Tampke. "He will be missed because he has been an extremely loyal and effective leader during his tenure. The university is fortunate to have someone as qualified as Mark Mathews to manage the department during this transition period. I look forward to working closely with him to continue maintaining the safety and security of the Ohio University campus."
The university will conduct a national search, with the anticipation of naming a new chief of police by the beginning of the 2006-07 academic year.
