ATHENS, Ohio (May 3, 2006) -- The dance "Something Went," created by Ohio University senior dance major Jennifer Rusynyk, was recently selected to represent the East Central region at the 12th National American College Dance Festival, May 15-18, at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington D.C.
Rusynyk's "Something Went," which is choreographed for 17 performers to the music of Ella Fitzgerald, is one of four dances selected from the region to be preformed at the National Festival based on outstanding artistic excellence and merit. Her dance was the only work created by an undergraduate dancer. She also was honored as the outstanding choreographer from the region.
"It is very reassuring to find out that I am going down the right path and that I have a creative voice that speaks to the people," Rusynyk said.
She has been working on her dance for the past two years, seeing it grow and change as different dancers perform it, saying that she sees new things in it every time she watches it.
Forty college dance programs from Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio participated in the East Central regional American College Dance Festival held at Ohio State University, March 18-21. They performed choreography created by faculty, graduate or undergraduate students, and professional choreographers, which was judged by nationally recognized dance professionals.
Rusynyk, a Jeromesville, Ohio, native, said she is thrilled to be traveling to the National Festival and grateful to the School of Dance and the College of Fine Arts for making the trip possible.
"It's great that the school and Ohio University will be nationally recognized, which I'm glad of, but the faculty, staff and administrators are also giving me an extremely significant opportunity to show my work and put my name out there, and that is really invaluable," she said.
A biennial event, the National American College Dance Festival showcases works selected from each of the 10 regions at three gala performances at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater. The National Festival seeks to highlight, on a national level, that outstanding quality of choreography and performance that is being created on college and university campuses.
