Ohio University Eastern announces education partnership with Mt. Carmel Community Baptist Church

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (March 20, 2006) -- Ohio University Eastern Campus is pleased to announce the formation of an educational partnership with the Mt. Carmel Community Baptist Church.

This unique partnership provides Steubenville residents access to a quality, public university education, bringing university services directly to the students in an effort to encourage underrepresented minorities and first-generation students to begin their college studies.

"Through this partnership, Steubenville area residents will receive direct services and support from Eastern Campus personnel in Steubenville before transitioning to the Eastern Campus in St. Clairsville," said Kristen Burrier, recruitment coordinator and academic adviser at the Eastern Campus. "This partnership is specially beneficial for students who are uncertain whether a college education is within their reach."

University courses will be delivered to members of the greater Steubenville community at the Mt. Carmel Community Baptist Church by having faculty members on site and through distance education opportunities. Additional program components available to Steubenville residents include Admission and FAFSA Nights (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at the Mt. Carmel Community Baptist Church. Students will also have the opportunity to visit the Eastern Campus. Additional programming for the youth of Steubenville will be made available, such as bringing the Junior Bobcat Camp to the Steubenville area.

Also being unveiled in Steubenville through this partnership is the Smooth Start Program. This innovative program provides students with financial and educational support which equips them with the necessary tools to make a seamless transition into higher education.

After students relocate to the Eastern Campus, intensive support services will continue to assist them in their goal to work toward degree completion.

This spring, the first course will be offered to high school juniors and seniors. The course, entitled "The University Experience," will help students adapt to the demands of a university education as they explore the academic environment, assess interests, values and abilities, explore academic majors, discover success strategies and establish their educational and career goals. This course is offered at Mt. Carmel Community Baptist Church, 708 North 5th Street, Steubenville, on Mondays from 5 to 7:45 p.m. beginning March 27 and continuing through June. Future course offerings will be open to adult learners as well and will include general education courses.

Call Kristen Burrier at the Eastern Campus for information pertaining to this event, the University Experience course for juniors and seniors, or for future programming at 1-800-648-3331. For information regarding all the campus has to offer, visit the Web site at www.eastern.ohiou.edu.
