Summer Sessions gives Early Start to incoming freshmen

ATHENS, Ohio (March 8, 2006) -- Ohio University Summer Sessions is offering the Early Start Freshman Summer Experience this year. The program, designed to give incoming freshmen a head start in their college careers, will be open to any students admitted to Ohio University this fall. Participating freshmen attend summer classes during one or both of the two five-week summer sessions running June 19 through July 21 or July 24 through Aug. 25.

The Early Start Freshman Summer Experience is a fully integrated program offering a residential, credit-bearing curriculum coupled with a range of services designed to address specific needs of first-year students. Students will attend a full precollege orientation session offered the Sunday before the start of classes. In orientation, students will receive advising and counseling, take placement tests and register for summer classes. Students will also participate in a follow-up orientation to prepare for fall quarter registration.

Participants whose permanent addresses are not within commuter distance will live on-campus and be paired with roommates sharing similar interests. Early Start freshmen will have access to all university resources including all campus services and recreation centers. Students may also participate in many extracurricular activities and supplemental seminars to learn more about the university.

"There are many advantages first-quarter students will gain by participating in this program," said Pam Brown, director of Summer Sessions. "Summer quarter is a relaxed and fun time to be on campus. Students can become acquainted with the campus, university life, and better understand what it means to be a college student before the mass of students comes to Athens in September."

"By participating in this program students will be among the first to make college friends, register for fall classes, earn college credit at a lower tuition rate than fall, find out information about different majors or volunteer programs or tutoring services, and have some fun," Brown added. "It's a great way to ensure an early, successful start to a degree program at Ohio University."
