Goal 1 - Oversee the implementation of Vision OHIO, specifically the following goals for this year.
- Initiate the process to revise the General Education Program.
I have had many discussions about revising the General Education Program with the Chair of the Faculty Senate and President of the Student Senate during the 2005-06 academic year. I also facilitated meetings with the Provost, Faculty Senate Executive Committee, President of the Student Senate, the Academic Affairs Commissioner of the Student Senate, and both Student Trustees in April 2006 and May 2006 to discuss a process for developing a new General Education Program. The process for revising the General Education Program will be presented to the Board of Trustees during the June 2006 Board meeting.
- Determine which graduate programs and research areas will improve the distinctiveness and national prominence of Ohio University.
I held discussions with the Provost and Vice President for Research to identify which graduate programs and research areas would be prime candidates for excellence and national prominence in the years ahead. Additional discussions will be held with the Provost, Vice President for Research, and faculty committees during the 2006-07 academic year to begin making decisions regarding which graduate programs and research areas will be designated for national prominence.
- Continue to build a diverse campus community by establishing the Appalachian Scholars Program in the region and expanding the Urban Scholars Program into a national scholarship program.
Deborah and I initiated the Appalachian Scholars Program during the 2005 Fall Quarter with a $10,000 contribution. The Appalachian Scholars Program is being implemented by the Office of Diversity in the President's Office. To date, 172 students have applied for this scholarship. Ten high school seniors will be selected for the 2006-07 class of Appalachian Scholars. I made a decision to retain the Urban Scholars Program as a statewide scholarship program for high school seniors from urban areas across Ohio during the 2005-06 academic year. Ten high school seniors will be selected for the 2006-07 class of Urban Scholars. We will expand the Urban Scholars Program into a national scholarship program for high school seniors from urban areas for the 2007-08 academic year.

Once the recommendations were completed by the Task Force in January 2006, they were vetted with the Student Senate, other student groups, and other groups across campus and in the community.
