Ohio University creates office to support partnerships, research and outreach activities

ATHENS, Ohio (Jan. 17, 2006) -- Ohio University is creating the Office for University Outreach, effective March 1, to support the goals of Vision OHIO, the university's strategic plan, by assisting in the development of partnerships that support multidisciplinary research and other outreach activities.

The new office will be will be administered by Charles Bird, whose title will be changed from vice president for regional higher education to vice president for university outreach and regional campuses.

"The Office for University Outreach will assist individuals and organizations, both within the university and outside of the university," Bird said. "Our intention is to strengthen the scope and effectiveness of our commitment to serve Appalachia Ohio, especially in relation to public education, economic development and health issues. We also intend to encourage outreach that links the university and southeastern Ohio to potential partners across the state and around the world."

The Office for University Outreach will collect information from all types of outreach activities, and it will help assess the effectiveness of those activities. A major effort will be to renew and increase the range of service learning opportunities for students and to engage students through both volunteer and paid activities in the region. Also, outreach activities tied to faculty research and service and services provided by administrative offices across all Ohio University campuses will be encouraged.

"In order to provide greater support for the goals outlined in Vision OHIO, Ohio University must maximize its resources. The establishment of this new office will promote partnerships and engage students in activities that serve the needs of the region, state, nation and world," Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis said. "We anticipate appointing a director to head the Office of University Outreach in the near future."

University Outreach will develop and maintain a searchable Web site of outreach activities, serve as a point of contact and help link interested individuals and organizations with similar interests. It will further actively seek to establish new opportunities and expand outreach, promote and publicize examples of outreach activities at the university and help to pursue external funding in support of outreach.
