ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (Jan. 5, 2006) -- Virginia Helms believes in education and she believes in making a difference in a student’s life. These are some of the reasons that inspired Ginny and her late husband Thomas to establish the Thomas and Virginia Helms Scholarship for Elementary Education.
The Thomas and Virginia Helms Scholarship for Elementary Education is for elementary education majors attending Ohio University-Eastern (OUE). This year’s recipients were Amanda Eikenberry, from Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, and Katie Rinkes, from Toronto, Ohio.
Ginny hosted a tea in her home to provide an opportunity to get to know "her" students. "This was a wonderful opportunity to meet Ginny," said Rinkes. "I am extremely grateful to her for establishing this scholarship. It is a tremendous gift."
Katie is the daughter of Kevin and Susan Rinkes and she plans to pursue a career in early childhood education.
Amanda is the daughter of Michelle and Vernon Eikenberry. She is a middle childhood major and hopes to be able to teach science in an elementary or middle school. Eikenberry would like to go on and obtain a masters degree.
"I am extremely grateful to Ginny for this scholarship," said Eikenberry. "It has made a tremendous difference in my being able to afford to attend the university."
Students wishing to apply for The Thomas and Virginia Helms Scholarship for Elementary Education or for other scholarships at Ohio University-Eastern for the 2006-2007 school year should contact OUE, student services at 740-699-2504.
