Ohio University Eastern offers winter workshops

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (Jan. 3, 2006) -- Ohio University Eastern Campus is offering a variety of workshops during the 2006 Winter Quarter. All of the workshops are worth 1 credit hour and cost $150.

Two of the workshops are geared towards teachers; "Math... Instead of Worksheets" for grades K-3 and grades 4-8. These classes will help teachers to develop strategies and activities that will be an alternative to everyday math worksheets. The K-3 Workshop will meet Feb. 7, 9 and 16 from 4 to 7:15 p.m. and the grades 4 through 8 workshop will be held March 7, 9 and 14 from 4 to 7:15 p.m.

The Basic Word Workshop will also be offered and will benefit anyone wanting to learn the basics of Microsoft Word. Students will learn to set up toolbars, save documents, copy, cut, paste, become familiar with menus, use workart, format painter, format paragraphs and much more. This workshop will be held Feb. 13, 20 and 27 from 4 to 7:15 p.m.

A Grant Writing Workshop will be offered Jan. 23, 25 and 30 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and can benefit anyone, teachers and social services personnel alike, who need grant writing skills. It offers a broad overview of external funding for education and social services organizations. Students learn grant writing strategies that increase the success of an application.

On Jan. 19, 23, 26 and 30 and Feb. 2 and 6, an "Understanding the Stars" Workshop will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. This workshop can benefit anyone interested in astronomy and may be of particular interest to middle school science teachers. High school and elementary school teachers in any area many also want to participate. The course will cover the life of a star and how they are classified. Students will use recreations of astronomical instruments to study celestial bodies and perform a lab experience to learn how astronomers measure the distance to stars.

"Workshops are an excellent way to pursue an area of interest or to pick up a needed credit hour," said Eastern Campus Dean Paul E. Bibbins, Jr., Ph.D. "To meet the needs and busy life styles of individuals who are working, we are offering all of these workshops in the evening."

Anyone interested in the winter workshops should contact the Ohio University Eastern Registration Office at (740) 699-2504 or 1-800-648-3331, ext. 2504, or schucker@ohio.edu.
