ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (Dec. 19, 2005) -- Six sixth-graders from St. Clairsville Middle School have teamed up with Ohio University Eastern Campus to help everyone stay warm this winter. The girls, Corianne Cain, Taylor Baugh, Brittany Coleman, Marisa Dwyer, Emily Vickers and Cecelia Favede, voted in early December to collect new blankets between now and the end of January. They decided to donate all the blankets and money collected to the Council of Churches for distribution within their service area of Richland School District. The sixth-graders work with co-advisers Alex Cain, a St. Clairsville High School student, and Crystal Lorimor, an Eastern Campus administrator, on their project, "Cover the Community."
The sixth-graders decided to collect blankets this year, because as the holidays approached and the temperatures dropped, they started thinking of their friends and neighbors who deserved a warm winter. Recognizing that it will be a long winter, the girls will collect blankets through the end of January. This will allow people who donate blankets an opportunity to hit the after-holiday sales.
The six have already inspired other groups. Ohio University Eastern's Student Ambassadors are helping Cover the Community. Student Ambassadors are good will ambassadors for Ohio University Eastern, both among their fellow students and among their associates outside the university. According to the Student Ambassadors' adviser, Jennifer Kellner, the college students decided that in January, when classes resume after the Winter Break, they will visit several Eastern Campus classes encouraging their classmates to donate. The Student Ambassadors are also planning other fundraisers on the campus to raise money for blankets.
From doing this project, the young ladies are learning the spirit of community service as well as experience working on a committee. They brainstorm, organize plans, meet weekly, write press releases, design posters, disseminate flyers and recruit other helpers. If you would like to donate blankets, please drop them off at donation sites at Sipper's Café, Ohio University Eastern's Shannon Hall front lobby or at the St. Clairsville Public Library.
