ATHENS, Ohio (Dec. 1, 2005) -- Ohio University students earned nearly one quarter of the awards in the 60th annual College Photographer of the Year competition sponsored by the University of Missouri. Ohio University, the only university in the state of Ohio to win any honors, won the most awards in the international competition.
Judges selected the award-winning pieces from more than 9,000 image submissions by undergraduate and graduate students. Fourteen Ohio University students, all from the School of Visual Communication, earned the 20 awards.
"To walk away with that number of awards shows that Ohio University is having a tremendous year," School of Visual Communication Director Terry Eiler said. "What sets our students' work apart is the multidisciplinary nature of their education. In this program a photojournalism student also picks up interactive media skills, studio skills and audio skills. That kind of diversity puts an edge on their work and their education."
Ohio University tied with Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, Calif., for the highest number of first-place awards with five.
"We have sophomore students who won, juniors, seniors, graduate students. It's really nice to see that range," Eiler said, adding that the school attracts talented students as well as faculty.
Eligible students had less than two years of full-time experience as a professional photographer. The competition for the 86 total awards in 16 categories was stiff because of the range of competitors.
"We look to College Photographer of the Year because it is open to any student at any school whether they have a photojournalism school or not," Associate Professor Marcy Nighswander said.
Ohio University has participated in the competition, the oldest collegiate photography competition in the nation, since its beginning 60 years ago. The Ohio University School of Visual Communication is a well-respected one that has been recognized twice as a Program of Excellence by the Ohio Board of Regents. The school has produced more Fulbright Fellowships in the last five years than any other university photography program in the country.
