ATHENS, Ohio (Aug. 11, 2006) -- The Cresset Chapter of Mortar Board honor society at Ohio University was presented with the Silver Torch Award for the 2005-06 academic year at the organization’s recent national conference held in Columbus.
The award was presented to the Ohio University chapter for its “timeliness and dedication while exemplifying the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service.” Ryan Basford, president of the chapter, accepted the award.
Last September, chapter members held a car wash at Athens Wal-Mart to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims. Theirs was among 25 Ohio University organizations that donated a check for $21,490 to the American Red Cross to aid Hurricane Katrina victims.
“The Cresset chapter at Ohio University … stayed in good contact with (its) section coordinator and the national office staff, made submissions to Mortar Board’s semi-annual publication, The Forum, maintained good campus visibility and exemplified scholarship, leadership and service,” said Alicia D. Notestone, communications coordinator for the Mortar Board national office.
Founded in 1918, Mortar Board is a national honor society for college seniors that recognizes and develops leadership and service and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community.
