ZANESVILLE, Ohio (Feb. 9, 2005) -- The Ohio University-Zanesville Scholastic Fellows Program is designed to provide supplemental educational opportunities to intellectually and socially mature students. The State of Ohio, under Senate Bill 140 and House Bill 215, enables high schools and institutions of higher learning to cooperate in offering high school students the opportunity to enroll in college level course work prior to graduation from high school.
Eligible students have two options. Option A allows students to receive college credit, but no high school credit for the course(s) in which they enroll, unless the high school makes special provisions. Under this option, the student pays for textbooks, tuition and other fees, and may enroll for any fall, winter, spring or summer quarter.
Option B permits students to receive college credit for the course(s) in which they enroll as well as credit toward fulfilling high school graduation requirements. Under this option, the Ohio Department of Education pays tuition and textbook charges, but enrollment is restricted to the fall, winter and spring quarters only. Students may register for courses in the summer only if they pay for tuition, textbooks and other fees. Summer courses may not apply toward high school graduation requirements.
Students who rank in the top 25 percent (for Option B) or in the top 40 percent (for Option A) of your school class based on your overall record are eligible to apply. If the school does not rank students, students must have an accumulative grade point average of a 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale (Option B) or a 3.2 (Option A). If a student has shown marked improvement during the most recently completed two semesters or has special abilities, he or she may be admitted upon recommendation from the appropriate high school official and with the approval of the Director of Student Services on your campus and the campus dean.
An additional requirement is that the student must be pursuing a college preparatory curriculum or another curriculum suitable for college. They must have passed all sections of the ninth grade proficiency test, or starting with the graduating class of 2007, must demonstrate at least a tenth-grade achievement level in all test areas.
Students considering applying for the Scholastic Fellows Program at Ohio University-Zanesville should meet with his or her guidance counselor. The deadline for applications for the 2005-2006 Scholastic Fellows Program is May 1.
