Eastern Campus students to attend Bobcat football game

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (Aug. 17, 2005) -- Students from the Eastern Campus have been invited to Athens to cheer on the Bobcats in their matchup against Kent State University on Sept. 24. Regional students have the opportunity to visit the main campus and to feel a part of Athens student life.

"After reviewing research conducted by OUE students concerning main campus involvement, the call for regional campus inclusion needs to be addressed," said Heidi Porter, OUE student. "A great deal of students feel distant from the main campus and do not like labels such as 'branch' or 'twig.' Often regional students feel disconnected from the main campus, but this trip is sure to bridge the gap," she added. The trip is being sponsored by the Ohio University Eastern Chapter of the Alumni Association and an anonymous donor has sponsored the bus that will transport students to Athens.

While university alumni in the St. Clairsville area have been invited on the bus trip, students of OUE receive the bus ride, game ticket and entrance to the regional campus tailgate party at no charge. It's a great opportunity for regional students to be included in a main campus sporting event. If students are interested, they will also have the option to receive a tour of the Athens Campus.

"This will be an unforgettable event for our regional students, because for some of them, this will be their first trip to Athens. The fellowship resulting from this trip will further enhance their experience as an OU student," stated Kristen Burrier, OUE academic adviser. She adds, "We are so excited for the opportunity to cheer on our Bobcats together."

Dr. Paul Bibbins, dean of Ohio University Eastern states, "I think this is a great opportunity for our students to visit the main campus. They will have the chance to tour the campus, and hopefully visit their departments, along with cheering for their Bobcats football team. In other words, they will have the opportunity to enjoy the full impact of the university experience. I encourage the departments on the main campus to invite our regional campus students to Athens for other activities. We are one university."

The bus trip to Athens is sure to be a memorable event and Eastern students will feel more a part of Athens student life as they take part in an important main campus event.
