Charles McWeeny named interim dean of Ohio University College of Fine Arts

ATHENS, Ohio (Aug. 1, 2005) -- Charles McWeeny has been appointed interim dean of Ohio University’s College of Fine Arts, effective Aug. 1.

Charles McWeeny photo by Rick FaticaMcWeeny, associate dean for the college for the past four years, replaces Raymond Tymas-Jones, who has accepted the position as associate vice president for the arts and dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah. His resignation is effective Aug. 31.

“As a long-time faculty member and administrator in the College of Fine Arts, Charles has great breadth of knowledge of both the college and the university. Also, he has the respect of colleagues throughout the university and the strong leadership skills that are necessary for this position,” Provost Kathy Krendl said.

McWeeny earned a bachelor of arts degree from Cleveland State University and a master of fine arts degree from the University of Oklahoma. McWeeny, whose expertise is in ceramics, joined the university’s College of Fine Arts in 1983 and was promoted to professor in 1997. He was graduate chair of the School of Art from 1998 to 2001 and was named associate dean in July 2001.

McWeeny has exhibited his ceramic installations and sculpture nationally and internationally. He received Individual Artist Fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council in 1997 and 1999 and has lectured and conducted demonstrations at more than 20 schools and conferences.

“The College of Fine Arts has outstanding faculty, students and programs, and I am honored to work on behalf of them during this important time for the institution,” McWeeny said. “The college can play an important role in increasing national prominence and I look forward to working with the administration to achieve this. Through the support of our students and faculty I will continue to promote art experiences that enhance the quality and meaning of people’s lives.”

A national search will be conducted to identify a dean, with the goal of having the position filled by the summer of 2006.
