ATHENS, Ohio (May 13, 2005) -- The Ohio University Human Resources Department began its new online open enrollment benefits process on May 2. The process will end May 31. In previous years, employees were required to submit a paper form to the benefits office.
In its first week, 781 employees (278 administrators, 304 classified, 199 faculty) completed the online process. Last week, 229 administrators, 192 classified and 167 faculty employees used the online process.
"Our goal for this and similar University Human Resource projects is two fold - first to improve the accessibility and quality of our services particularly to faculty and our most mobile employees and secondly, to reduce the overall cost of these kinds of transactions," said Mark Kesler, Ohio University director of human resource systems and organizational development. "We found that it was costing the institution about $7 per employee to process the paper for the whole population. With this project, we expect to reduce that cost to less than $2."
The online enrollment process has been in the works since July 2001. The new format is especially convenient for faculty who are traveling.
"One faculty member was able to successfully access and use the system from Europe," Kesler said.
To encourage participation, an incentive prize raffle will be held each week for those who complete the online process. Prizes include: one free month of benefit premiums, WellWorks memberships and WellWorks massages.
The team working on the new online enrollment process consists of technical members Mark Kesler and Akos Csete and functional members Steve Madden and Leah Buck.
"We've put a lot of work into this and we're really excited about the response we've had so far," Kesler said.
