ATHENS, Ohio (May 9, 2005) -- Ohio University will celebrate International Week, May 16-21. This year's International Week will focus on the theme "Open Minds-Open Borders." The week will begin Monday, May 16 with a keynote address by Harriet Fulbright, president of the Fulbright International Center and a member of the JW Fulbright Foreign Scholarships Board (which her late husband, Senator J. William Fulbright, established). Fulbright will speak on "The Fulbright Legacy: Opening Minds" Monday, May 16, at 8 p.m. in the Walter Hall Rotunda. The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception.
Visual arts with an international flavor will be on exhibit in two locations during International Week. The Office of Education Abroad will exhibit photographs submitted for the international photography contest in Baker Center's 1954 Lounge Monday, May 16 and Tuesday, May 17. The Kennedy Museum will feature, "The Bragro Experience: Seating with Honour to Motherhood," an exhibit focusing on the role of stools as important markers in the social and ceremonial life of large groups of African women. This is an ongoing exhibit. Other International Week events include:

The week concludes with the 24th annual International Street Fair on Court Street from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 21. The fair provides an opportunity for the community to enjoy the music, food and art of many international cultures. "International Week and the Street Fair offer a unique opportunity for the university, the city of Athens and our student and scholars from countries throughout the world to gather together to celebrate our lives and our cultures," said Alan Boyd, director of International Student and Faculty Services at Ohio University. "During the week, we can listen to the wisdom of international scholars, sing and dance and enjoy the colors, foods and artifacts of the world."
