ATHENS, Ohio (April 27, 2005) -- Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis presented a check for $44,000 to Athens Mayor Ric Abel during the mayor's weekly press conference Wednesday, April 27. The check represents the university's contribution of funds in the same amount that the state legislature directs to the city as part of the state's Impacted City Fund each biennium.
"This presentation is intended as a sign of goodwill from the university to the city and a tangible expression that the university appreciates the close relationship it has with the city and, in the spirit of being the best neighbor possible, wants to build upon this strong relationship," McDavis said.
The Impacted City Fund supports cities in which state universities are located and is intended to support the police, fire and other services that are required to support a university campus. The funds are directed from the State Legislature to the Ohio Board of Regents, which disperses the money to individual universities.
"The city and the university have always had a special relationship with each other. In many ways, they exist for each other," Abel said. "This area was designed to support a university since it was founded and the tradition continues today with this strong partnership."
