ATHENS, Ohio (April 15, 2005) -- Facing its stiffest competition thus far, Ohio University finished fifth out of 34 schools in the final RecycleMania 2005 standings. In the final week, the Bobcats posted 6.06 pounds of recycled items per student living on campus to finish with 50.80 pounds. Defending champion Miami University (66.19) held off the University of Oregon (65.10) to win the competition and the RecycleMania trophy.
Bowling Green State University, the 2002 and 2003 champion, placed third with 55.77 pounds, while Oregon State University grabbed fourth place with 53.29.
In the all-campus recycling competition, Ohio University finished 11th out of 29 schools with 28.44 percent of its total waste recycled. California State University San Marcos won the competition with a recycling rate of 43.65 percent and led wire-to-wire. Tufts University was a close second with a 41.39 rate, followed by Kalamazoo College (36.70) and Northwest Missouri State University (36.26).
"Although there is only one official winner in each competition, every school is a winner because recycling rates were increased on every campus," said Ohio University Director of Refuse and Recycling Ed Newman. "Ohio University put up solid and consistent recycling numbers throughout the competition and I'm proud of the way our campus competed. I'm already looking forward to next year's competition."
The primary goal of RecycleMania is to increase awareness about recycling and involve the entire campus in the university's recycling program. Studies have shown that university and college residence and dining halls typically generate 30 to 70 percent of a campus' total waste, half of which is recyclable.
Miami University will receive the RecycleMania trophy and a congratulatory half-page ad in all of the other participating schools' newspapers. California State University San Marcos will receive the Bowling Pin Character from Junk Trophy for winning the recycling rate competition.
