'OU Idol' seeks talented student singers

ATHENS, Ohio (Jan. 26, 2005) -- The Office of Student Activities presents the first-ever "OU Idol," Ohio University's very own singing competition for students.

Preliminary rounds will take place at 10 p.m. in Baker University Center Ballroom on Thursdays, Jan. 27 through Feb. 17. These performances will be held according to where students live. Students on East Green will perform on Jan. 27, followed by West Green on Feb. 3 and South Green on Feb. 10. Students living off-campus will compete on Feb. 17. Students should prepare a CD with the accompanying music and background vocals, if necessary. They also have the option to sing a cappella.

Winners of the preliminary competitions will then compete in the semifinals at 10 p.m. on Thursday Feb. 22, in Baker University Center Ballroom. The winners of the semifinals will perform at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26.

The overall winner will receive a quarter of free tuition and be named "OU Idol."

"We have many talented students who will enjoy the opportunity to demonstrate their singing ability, and the chance to possibly win free tuition should definitely be a great incentive as well," said Chad Barnhardt, interim assistant director for student activities. "I also think that many people across campus and in the community will enjoy watching these students perform."

Full-time students are eligible for the competition. Those interested in participating must register beginning at noon on the Monday preceding the competition in the area they live by e-mailing ouidol@ohio.edu. The individuals who submit the first 20 e-mails from each living location received after noon will be selected to participate.

"OU Idol" is one of the many late-night programs sponsored by the university. The Division of Student Affairs and the Office of the Provost have made significant financial contributions to the development of these programs.
