ATHENS, Ohio (Nov. 17, 2004) -- The Center for Community Service (CCS) is currently coordinating the second annual Love Luggage Project. Students are asked to look in their sheds, basements, cellars and attics over winter break for old suitcases, luggage or backpacks to donate to the project.
The luggage collected will be hand-painted and decorated by volunteers who will fill them with basic necessities so they can be given to children in foster care. Nearly half a million children in this nation are in foster care. Many of these children are removed from abusive homes with very little to call their own and must use trash bags to transport belongings. The donated items will benefit Sojourners Care Network Foster Care children in Vinton County
Donations needed to fill the luggage include: toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, blankets, stuffed animals, art supplies, books, shampoo and conditioner and baby items. All donations may be taken to the Center for Community Service in 033 Baker University Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday
This year's Love Luggage Project will be in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr., National Day of Service, which takes place on Monday, Jan. 17, 2005. Volunteers will meet that day in the Corner Café of Baker University Center to decorate the donated luggage.
