ATHENS, Ohio (Sept. 7, 2004) -- As part of the 39th annual International Literacy Day on Sept. 8, the Appalachia READS Center will host a Jubilee featuring reader Ohio University First Lady Deborah McDavis and others at noon in the 1954 Lounge in Baker University Center on the Ohio University campus.
To encourage potential students, tutors, sponsors and the public to get involved with literacy and make a personal contribution, Appalachia READS has invited special guests to read a five-minute excerpt from their favorite book or work of poetry.
In additional to listening to the readings, community members will have the opportunity to sign up for library cards, register to vote and win prizes.
Events promoting literacy awareness and community involvement will take place in every national around the world and in the Appalachian region of Southeastern Ohio. This is the first year that Appalachia READS has hosted an International Literacy Day celebration.
