This is the second in a series of discussions with faculty and staff who use LEO, OHIO’s Electronic Research Information Web application. The development process of the application enabled the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) to re-evaluate standard business practices and to identify areas for improvement. The resulting tool has equipped ORSP to better meet the needs of faculty and staff with LEO features such as the electronic transmittal form (eTF), the digitization of all ORSP records, and an electronic award notification system. The purpose for this series is to share information about the application through the eyes of various end users; and to highlight aspects of the system.
Stephanie Kearns, Grants Manager in the Department of Psychology, offered encouraging words about the LEO application and its impact on her workload. “I think it is a real positive” she stated, and using LEO “definitely saves me time”. She continued by saying she thinks it is “great to be able to go on-line and find budgets and award documents right at my fingertips.” Kearns further shared that when the Dean’s office implemented a 24 hour prior notice requirement for providing signatures on transmittal forms – she had significant difficulty getting proposal materials processed in time to meet the deadline. However, she explained, by using the eTF process (which enables electronic signatures) she found it to be a “real blessing”, and feels the tool has made her job less stressful. She commented that she is able to address faculty inquires about their grants immediately and therefore their individual communications have become more efficient. She concluded by saying, “LEO is definitely a step in the right direction”.
