Chemistry Placement Test
The chemistry placement test is a national exam to evaluate students' skills in algebra, general science, and high school chemistry. Additional information about the chemistry placement test is available at http://www.ohio.edu/chemistry/undergrad (click on Placement Exams). This web site answers questions about the content of the exam, taking the exam at another time than Orientation if you change to a major that requires CHEM 151, retaking the exam, and using the exam to make career decisions.
English Composition Exemption
During Bobcat Student Orientation, all students who do not have AP or transfer credit for the Tier I requirement are assigned to take ENG 151 or 152 or 153 during a particular quarter–fall, winter or spring quarter–or receive a 1E placement (may take any quarter). Students who believe that their writing abilities are such that they might be waived from the first year or junior composition requirement may choose to take the Exemption Exam on the first Saturday of fall, winter, or spring quarter. Students must pre-register to take the two-hour timed essay test based on a provided text. Preregistration is free but required and typically occurs during the week preceding the exam at the Department of English (360 Ellis Hall) from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., 740-593-2838. Students may take each exam only one time. Results are available 10 days after taking the exam at the same location where students preregister, in time for students to drop a class without penalty if schedule changes are needed. Students who are exempted through the exam process do not receive credit hours for the course. The exam can only exempt students from the university-wide writing requirement; individual departments may have different major or minor requirements, so students should check with their departments before taking the exam.
Foreign Language Placement Tests for Spanish, French, or German
If you have studied ANY Spanish in high school, you MUST take the Spanish Language Placement Exam BEFORE you can enroll in SPAN 111 or 199. If you wish to enroll in FR 199, you must take the French Language Placement Exam. Otherwise, it is optional but recommended for students with 2 or more years of high school French. The German Language Placement Exam is optional but recommended for students with 2 or more years of high school German. These self-paced computer exams, offered in Gordy Hall 015, take about 40 minutes. Staff members from the Modern Languages Department will provide you with information about the meaning of your test results and advise you further on your placement.
Math Placement Exam
The University uses a student’s ACT or SAT math score to determine the student’s skill level for placement unless the Tier I quantitative skills requirement has been satisfied by transfer or advanced placement credit. Students in some majors are required to have a math placement regardless of transfer or advanced placement credit in order to meet prerequisite requirements. The choice of the course in which you should enroll depends on your major, University catalog of entry, math placement, and should be discussed with your academic advisor. Additional information about the math placement exam is available at http://www.ohio.edu/orientation/MathPlacement.cfm. This web page provides information about Math Placement, how to take the Math Placement Exam, review tools, and placement results.
