Why did you pick Ohio University?
I absolutely loved the atmosphere on campus! It was a great size, surrounded by beautiful scenery, and had a homey feel. I had visited other college campuses where I felt uncomfortable walking around and interacting with people, but at OU, I immediately felt welcomed by the school and community. I also really liked the old-fashioned feel of campus. I loved that it felt like an old college town, filled with brick streets, brick buildings, and a rich history.
What is the best part about living in Athens?
Athens has so much to offer! I love the eclectic, cultural feel of the town. There are great local restaurants, shops, and bands to explore that will appeal to anyone. Athens is also immersed in the foothills of the Appalachians, so there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors: hiking, biking, canoeing, etc.
Where is your favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot on campus is Emeriti Park. It is a gorgeous, serene place to go and relax when I need to take a break from my busy life. There’s no better place to sit and enjoy Athens’ beauty than to sit under the gazebo or by the fountain at Emeriti Park on a nice day.
What has been your favorite class at OU and why?
One of my favorite classes at OU was Anthropology 101. Everything I learned in that class was new and interesting to me and made me think about issues in the world that I never had before. I read three novels about people living in various cultures around the world, including tribal communities in Africa and the Amazon rainforest. I was also exposed to the actual research my professor was doing in Kenya; and learning about the conditions those people were living in inspired me to want to take action and help those living in poverty.
What advice would you give to a first year student?
Make the most out of your college experience. Take initiative to meet new people and get involved on campus, whether in a student organization, athletics, volunteerism, etc. There are hundreds of ways to make a difference and leave your mark at OU. Try to maintain a healthy balance between academics, extracurriculars, work, and play. Make being a successful student your first priority and everything else will fall in place. If you develop time management skills and make smart choices, you’ll have a very rewarding college experience.
