College/Major: I am a music therapy major in the college of fine arts.
Why did you pick Ohio University?
I picked Ohio University because there is a great program for the major that I picked, and whenever I visited the campus I felt like it suited me. I always imagined that college would be in a scenic location away from a big city with plenty of open space and gorgeous places. It is small enough that you feel like you belong, yet big enough that you can really get involved in any activity that you are interested in.
What is the best part about living in Athens?
Even though it is not a big city, compared to urban campuses like Ohio State, there is everything you need within walking distance... and there are so many Athens-y places that have rich culture and history in them that it is never drab or boring.
Where is your favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot on campus, though there are many, may have to be the benches behind Bryan Hall looking out over east and south greens. In any season, the view is magnificent and it is peaceful and serene.
What has been your favorite class at OU and why?
My favorite class so far has probably been music history with Dr. Barte. Not only was the information relevant and interesting, but he has a way of connecting the past with what happens and why it happens in music today. Music is ever-changing and it was really interesting to see how it evolved from the very beginning to now. He also used good teaching tools such as videos and sound recording to better his course.
What advice would you give to a first year student?
The best advice that I can give, even though it is cliché, is to find groups and sports that you are interested in and get involved. You will make so many good friends that become like family, while giving yourself an outlet for expression or exercise. I joined a club sport and it has become a great part of my life, and I think it may have been the best decision I made here. I am also in a few groups in the school of music, including our music therapy association and an honor service sorority that serves the school of music. These activities have made me a better person and I really get a chance to give back to the community and make incredible bonds.
