Why did you pick Ohio University?
When it came time to apply for college, there really was no selection process. Somehow, I knew I wanted to go to OU. I’m not going to be corny and say there was some divine influence guiding me here, but it sure does feel that way sometimes. I only applied to OU, OSU, and Miami of Ohio. This was even though I already knew that OSU was too big and too close to home, and Miami was just not my atmosphere. Though it is a mystery as to how I ended up here, I’m really glad I followed my instincts.
What is the best part about living in Athens?
Being in a city that’s mostly populated with people relatively your own age is great. Especially in the summer, when there’s not as many people around. There is just a more relaxed feeling in the summer months. Specifically, the best part about living in Athens, for me, is not having to drive everywhere. I prefer walking, no matter where I am headed.
Where is your favorite spot on campus?
This is a tough one; there are many places of importance to me on this campus. Kantner Hall is up there on my favorites. Kantner houses the School of Theater, which has consumed most of my life, and I love it. The Front Room in the Baker Center is also great; I love performing on that stage. I’m also a frequent patron at Perk’s because I really love their teas.
What has been your favorite class at OU and why?
Almost all of my theater courses have been tremendous. Usually, no matter what the class is, it reaffirms my love of theater. I feel very fortunate to have found the right major for me. The Playwriting Workshop classes have been the most inspirational, certainly. Outside of Kantner, I highly recommend some courses I enjoyed: MDIA 184 and Dr. Condee’s THAR 473. Dr. Condee’s class studies theater arts through Indonesian Puppetry, which is very interesting. The mandatory tea and snacks make it even more enjoyable.
What advice would you give to a first year student?
Get involved. I attribute finding the perfect major and meeting my best friends to getting involved. Fall quarter, freshman year: student involvement fair on College Green. Really, you should check it out. Also, never feel as though things are too much to handle. The friends you make here at OU will be the friends that help you through everything, and the university has services and resources available to lend a hand.
