Ohio University Mixed Martial Arts Training Syllabus 03-04

Introduction: For training purposes, we use a syllabus as a teaching model. It not only helps us organize our weekly lessons in club but it sets the pace for our training so we can get as many of our goals accomplished as possible. For out-of-club purposes, the syllabus will aid students who are training alone. It gives them an idea of what techniqu es are important to train and in what order. If they get frustrated and plateau in their training, referencing the syllabus will help them stay focused and progress.

MMAC Mission Statement (yearly goals): Our purpose is to expose students to the techniques, principles, and cultures that encompass both Eastern and Western martial arts. In a full academic year of training, the student will become proficient in all ranges of martia l arts including Filipino Martial Arts, Muay Thai Kickboxing, and Grappling as a core. Students will also be exposed to a broad base of fighting styles through supplemental training, seminars, and personal research. Students will also become educated in self defense techniques and a basic knowledge of self defense principles and law.

Winter Quarter -- Students will expand on and refine their basic striking abilities by focusing a single core concept each week. By the end of the quarter, students will be introduced to grappling and ground striking.

Spring Quarter -- Students will build on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fundamentals from Winter Quarter by learning basic and advanced BJJ principles and t echniques. Students will shift their focus to 'live' drills that bridges ranges, deal with advanced and real world concepts, and draw on all skills learned throughout the year in a controlled but realistic environment. As the quarter comes to a close, students will have the opportunity to free roll and spar in full spectrum situations.
