1. Do I have to have any prior martial arts experience to join?

No. We begin the year with basics and review at the beginning of each quarter, so no one is left behind. No experience is necessary. In fact, the majority of people who join have little or no experience to begin with. Feel free to join at any point in the quarter and one of the officers will work with you one on one to bring you up to speed.

2. What kind of styles do you practice?

At OU Mixed Martial Arts we promote an open and inclusive environment for all martial arts and artists. At our core, we teach but are not limited to a blend of kickboxing, grappling, and Filipino Martial Arts. As we are a member driven club, any member with past experience and knowledge is free to share with the club so we may all learn. The end result is a martial arts experience that includes an effective mix of basic skills along with great exposure to new ideas, styles, and techniques.

3. Is there any official dress code or required uniform?

Not at all. Generally members wear t-shirts, workout pants, and running shoes. Gi's are also acceptable clothes to work out in. Basically, wear whatever you feel the most comfortable in. Our only request is that members do not wear belts they may have earned from other arts or systems. We do not support or enforce an official belt system. Just come dressed casual and prepared to work out.

4. Is your club a part of or affiliated with any parent organization (i.e. I.S.K.A. etc.)?

No. Our club is an independent organization and is in no way a part of a parent organization. Our club does keep in contact and is affiliated with outside instructors and organizations but chooses to remain an autonomous club.

5. So who runs the club? Who are the officers?

Our club is an entirely member driven group. We believe the members are our focus and priority and try to gauge our direction and progress on their wishes and requests as much as possible. Teaching and the otherwise non club related responsibilities (paper work, treasury, etc.) are taken up by the officers. The officers are students who have been in the club for a number of years and who have devoted their time and energy to training and to the betterment of the club. Officers include the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Safety Officer, and Fundraising Chair. They are present to further the club and guide members in their training.

6. What kind of work out can I expect?

You can expect a mainly cardio intensive workout. But depending on what you put into your workout will depend how much you get out of it. Also depending on what the lesson plan calls for will depend on the type of workout we will be running that club session.

7. Do you compete or have guest instructors?

OU Mixed Martial Arts does not compete officially. Though we have had past members train to compete in the Arnold Classic, Bando Nationals and Friday Night at the Fights. If you are very interested in this type of thing then we will do our best to help you contact the right people. We do have guest instructors ranging from past club instructors, to world renown instructors from Ohio and Texas. These instructors teach everything from Muy Thai kickboxing to Western Martial Arts.

8. What type of people come to your club?

OU Mixed Martial Arts is a club sport here at Ohio University. Accordingly, the majority of our membership is undergraduate and graduate students. Our club is open to all university faculty, students, and staff. Anyone interested may contact us at oumixedmartialarts@yahoo.com.

9. How often do you meet? Is this a class?

We meet from 9-11 Tues, Thurs. 2-4 Sat, and 2-4 Sun. This is a club sport not an official university class. Attendance is suggested as much is possible but is by no means required. Show up as often as your schedule allows.

10. How much does it cost to be in your club?

Our club is run on a quarterly basis as per the university academic schedule. Each quarter (approximately 10 weeks) we require 15 dollars for dues. 15 dollars is the minimum amount club sports require us to charge. All dues collected go into a club account and are used to fund social events and purchase new equipment. OU Mixed Martial Arts is non profit, any money collected goes right back into club.
