Creating Affordable Houses
Each Habitat House is built for and sold to a carefully-selected family.
There are three factors that make Habitat Houses an affordable solution to substandard housing. First, houses are sold at no profit, with no interest charged on the mortgage. Second, houses are built by homeowner and volunteer labor using mostly donated materials. The selected families are required to construct and fundraise for a total of 250 hours of “sweat equity”. Finally, the houses are greatly funded through the financial support of individuals, corporations, and various organizations.
The money raised by Habitat House payments is recycled to build more houses.
Choosing Families
Applicants for Habitat Houses are chosen by Family Selection Committees. The committee does not discriminate according to race, religion or ethnic group.
The committee makes family-selection decisions based on the applicants’ family income, current debts, ability to repay the no-profit/no-interest mortgage, inadequate living conditions, and willingness to work in partnership with Habitat for Humanity.
