Black Girl

Senegal, 1965, 60 mins, 16mm print
Director: Ousmane Sembene
Cast: Mbissine Thérèse Diop, Anne-Marie Jelinek, Robert Fontaine

Director of the current release Faat-Kine, Ousmane Sembene made a profound impression with his debut at international film festivals in 1966, and the evolution of Africa cinema can be dated from Black Girl's arrival. Shot in a simple, freewheeling New Wave style, it tells a direct, bitter, unambiguous story of the exile and despair of a Senegalese maid taken to the Riviera by her employers. Shorts to follow: Les Mistons, Antoine & Colette
