What is Athens BeautificationDay?

The 4th annual Athens Beautification Day, originally created and organized by the Ohio University Men's Water Polo Club in 2005, is a non-profit event hosted by the Ohio University Student Senate Off-Campus Living Commission with the goal of cleaning up the city while strengthening relationships among community groups.

With the help of student volunteers and local community leaders, pre-planned community service projects are organized and implemented throughout the local community. In past years, these projects have included the removal of graffiti on local structures, remulching and planting flowers around the city, picking up trash around off-campus streets, and many others.

The 2009 Beautification Day committee is excited to see the event solidified as a true annual event that teaches the importance of environmental awareness, citizenship, volunteerism, and good student and resident relationships. If you have any ideas or suggestions for future projects, please don't hesitate to contact the committee here.

Why is Athens Beautification Day important for the future of the city?

Athens is a picturesque city that endures a great deal of wear-and-tear at the hands of all residents. A clean-up effort is an opportunity to enhance the surroundings that are important to both students and permanent residents. Working side-by-side, students and residents will interact and gain respect for each other and the community while preserving the beauty of Athens. By making Athens a more enjoyable place to work, live, learn, and play, those outside of Athens will take notice and will be inspired to not only encourage the same innitiative in their own communities, but inspire new development and opportunities in Athens.

Where does the event take place?

Each year, Athens Beautification Day has kicked off with an opening ceremony at either McCracken Field or on College Green at Ohio University, which signals the beginning of a day of community service throughout the community. After the ceremony, volunteer groups are organized and dispersed to different project sites around the city. Past sites include The Dairy Barn, Passion Works, the Athens city parking garage, West Elementary School, the Athens Historical Society, and more... At the end of the day, the project sites are cleaned up and look better than the day before, all because Athens citizens volunteer their time and invest in the city's potential.
