Blackboard upgrade: Changes to basic navigation

Monday, March 24, 2014
Michelle Donaldson

The Blackboard upgrade scheduled for summer 2014 will bring multiple changes to the way Blackboard looks and functions. This multi-part news series looks at those changes in detail. All current instructors of record can preview the new Blackboard by logging into https://bbtest.ohio.edu.

This summer's Blackboard upgrade introduces a fundamentally different way of accessing your courses, course tools, and settings: My Blackboard.

My Blackboard replaces the previous central menu in Blackboard. It can be found in the upper right hand corner of your browser window.

Using the icons and text links in the dropdown menu, you can acess:

  • Global navigation: all of your courses and organizations
  • Posts: discussions, blogs, wikis, etc.
  • Updates: receive notification of changes within courses
  • My Grades: view grades without exiting course
  • Retention Center: Automatic notifications for at-risk students (instructors only)
  • Calendar: Course deadlines and reminders
  • Settings: manage text, contrast, and notification settings
  • Home icon: takes you to the OHIO Front Door website
  • Question mark icon: Takes you to the OIT Blackboard Support website

As part of this update, the "Logout" text link has been replaced by a small power switch icon immediately to the right of the My Blackboard menu dropdown at the upper right of your browser window.

Note: The My Blackboard overview page and video linked below include information about Social Community Tools. Those tools will not be enabled in OHIO's Blackboard server.
