Access your e-mail using IMAP and POP

The OIT Exchange Service is IMAP and POP compatible; therefore, you can use any IMAPS/POPS-compatible client to read your email. However, please be aware that you may lose much of the functionality of Exchange, including calendar and scheduling integration with other members of the University, if you choose not to use an Exchange-compatible client such as Outlook or Entourage, both of which are available at no charge to university affiliated persons. Also note that the browser client, Outlook Web Access (OWA), offers more Exchange features than an IMAP client and can be accessed securely online from anywhere at https://mail.ohio.edu/.

For these reasons, OIT does not recommend using an IMAP or POP client instead of an Exchange client (Outlook or Entourage, or Outlook Web Access).

If you would like to use an IMAP or POP client anyway, instructions for configuring IMAP/POP clients are provided below. Customers utilizing one of these or any other non-recommended client must obtain the necessary support from the product vendor and not from OIT. If you choose to use an unsupported IMAP or POP email client, you can configure the following settings to access your Exchange account:

IMAP4 Clients

- IMAP Server Name: mail.ohio.edu
- IMAPS Port: 143 and select TLS or STARTTLS in the client or 993 and select SSL in the client. Either setting should work and the choice is up to the user or client support.
- SMTP Server Name: mail.ohio.edu
- SMTP Port: 587 (Must select TLS or STARTTLS and authenticate using your ohio.edu credentials.)

POP3 Clients

- POP3 Server Name: mail.ohio.edu
- POP3S Port: 995 (Select SSL security in the client.)
- SMTP Server Name: mail.ohio.edu
- SMTP Port: 587 (Must select TLS or STARTTLS and authenticate using your ohio.edu credentials.)
