Moving Existing OHIO E-mail Messages to CatMail

NOTE: In order to use Catmail you must first have an active Catmail account. You will receive an e-mail alerting you when you are eligible to begin using Catmail.

CatMail's built-in import utility

Only messages in your Inbox can be moved using this method, so if you have messages saved in other folders, you either need to log in to OU Webmail and move those messages back to the Inbox or follow the directions under the Mulberry section below.

Once you have all the messages you want to copy over in the Inbox follow the instructions below:

  1. Open Internet Explorer and go to http://outlook.com/
  2. Login with your Windows Live ID and password.
  3. Near the top-right of the page, click Options.
  4. Under "Other Accounts", click New...
  5. In the "New Account" popup window, use the following:
  6. For E-mail address:   enter  YourOakID@oak.cats.ohiou.edu
    (e.g., ab123456@oak.cats.ohiou.edu).
  7. For Password: enter the same password you use for your OHIO ID and other online services.
  8. Click Next
  9. You'll see a confirmation notice that the accounts are now connected. Click Finish.
  10. Return to your Inbox using the My Mail link at the very top-right.Your email is now being transferred over from Oak to CatMail. This process can take several hours to complete.
  11. Allow several minutes for the system to complete it's next scheduled check of subscribed accounts. Your imported messages should begin appearing in your Inbox, with the original date and sender information still intact.
  12. Click on the Options button again.
  13. When the Status says "OK" your email has finished transferring. You must delete the account or your browser will continue to check for email to transfer.
  14. Highlight the account name and click the X button to delete it.

Using Mulberry to copy messages to CatMail

You can use Mulberry to drag and drop the contents of entire folders from Oak onto your CatMail account.  This can be useful if you have large numbers of messages stored in separate folders and do not want to have to sort them out of your CatMail inbox after transferring them.  Messages copied using this method will appear in CatMail as having arrived on the date of the copy, not the original message date.

If you don't already have access to a copy of the OU-licensed version of Mulberry, you can download it here.

Configure Mulberry to connect to your CatMail account

  1. Open Mulberry and log in using your Oak ID and Oak password (not your CatMail password).
  2. Go to File and choose Preferences.
  3. Choose the Advanced radio button.
  4. Go to the Accounts tab.
  5. Click the Account drop-down and choose New...
  6. In the Account Name box, type CatMail.  Make sure IMAP Mailbox is selected, and click Ok.
  7. In the Server box, type pod51000.outlook.com
  8. On the Authenticate sub-tab:
    1. Type your Oak e-mail address (e.g. ab123456@ohio.edu) in the User box
    2. Check Save User ID
    3. Under Secure choose SSLv3
  9. Click Ok.
  10. On Mulberry's Email tab, click the "+" next to CatMail to show your INBOX.
  11. Double-click INBOX underneath CatMail and enter your CatMail password when prompted.  Then click the small diamond icon next to <<Entire Hierarchy>> and click Ok.
  12. You now should see the contents of your CatMail inbox under CatMail:INBOX and the rest of your CatMail folders under CatMail:<<Entire Hierarchy>> (you may have to click the "+" next to this entry to see these folders).
  13. To move messages from Oak to CatMail, simply drag and drop them:
    • Inbox messages:
      • Click the "+" next to IMAP to show your inbox.
      • Click on the top INBOX entry under IMAP and drag individual messages from the message pane onto your CatMail:INBOX folder, or to move all inbox messages at once, just grab the top INBOX folder and drop it onto your CatMail:INBOX folder.
      • In the lower left of your Mulberry window, you will see a status message that indicates the transfer is under way.  If you have a large number of messages or a slow Internet connection, this process could take a while.
      • Don't close Mulberry or disconnect from the Internet until this status message reads "Network: Idle".
    • Other folders: (using "sentmail" as an example, but will work for any folder)

      • Don't close Mulberry or disconnect from the Internet until this status message reads "Idle".
    • You can create folders on CatMail, too, if you need more places to store messages:
