1950s Ronald Tompkins, AB '56, recently received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Ohio University's College of Arts and Sciences. Now retired, Tompkins was a gastroenterologic surgeon, professor of surgery and director of surgical education at the UCLA School of Medicine. He is editor-in-chief of the journal World of Surgery and director of the International Society of Surgery Foundation. Pat Synan Strom, BSHE '57, teaches work and family life classes for seventh- and eighth-graders at Carl F. Shuler Middle School in Cleveland. Virginia Smith Wiley, BS '57, is an associate professor in the office information technology department at the University of Cincinnati's Raymond Walters College, which presented her with the 2000 Distinguished Teaching Award. She received the National Business Teachers Postsecondary Teacher of the Year and Regional Business Teachers Postsecondary Teacher of the Year awards in 1999. Her husband, James Wiley, BSIT '58, works for Coldwell-Banker West Shell Realtors.
