L.J. HortinSetting the bar high My professor was L.J. Hortin, director of the School of Journalism in the '60s. I had a somewhat arduous time adjusting to college life. The freedom one has to do whatever you want and when you want can take its toll. Then "L.J.," as we all called him, began making notes on my work papers. He challenged and inspired me to do better work. We had in our journalism classes a soon-to-be well-known and talented Hollywood screenwriter, Joe Eszterhas, and other talented students. L.J. always had time for the talented and not so talented. On one of my final projects, when I was a senior, he wrote, "Mr. Gibson, you have made some real progress." Even now, when the going gets tough, I sometimes remember my favorite "prof" and I get going! Mike Gibson, BSJ '65 * * * Gibson is not the only student who thought highly of Hortin.
