Paul Hersey

A contagious enthusiasm

Paul Hersey (professor of management and director of the Center for Leadership Studies) was my No. 1 "outstanding" professor. What made him so great?

1. He had great passion for his subject. His enthusiasm was contagious. It made me get excited about his "Situational Leadership Theory" model.

2. He had a great deal of self-confidence, probably because he was always up-to-date in his subject. He also had a lot of confidence in his students. Therefore, he set demanding standards.

3. He made the complex simple. He used simple examples, stories and illustrations to make his points. In addition, he not only explained what was happening but also why it was happening.

I've written four books on management and leadership. My third book, "Be the Leader, Make the Difference," was dedicated to my mentors and teachers. Professor Hersey was one of them.

I currently teach at the college level. I strive to make my lectures/classes as effective and memorable as Professor Hersey's.

Thanks, Professor Hersey. And to think I only got a "C" in his course.
