Gerald DykstraA friend and mentor I surely enjoy receiving Ohio Today even though it has been many days since my husband and I were students there. Anyway, our favorite teacher was Gerald Dykstra, who taught business law. My husband, Dave, and I met in his class. He was an excellent professor as well as a friend. Of course, we were there as seniors when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Dave was able to complete that last year. Soon, however, students were leaving to go into the armed forces. Professor Dykstra, as well as his wife, who was also a lawyer, put out a publication called BLA (Business Law Alumni), which went all over the States and world. Then the first homecoming after the war, they had us gather at their home for a reunion after the game -‹ previously, all of us alumni, at their request, sent pictures -‹ so they had their living room with all the pictures taped to the walls. Then Professor Dykstra went around and told where everyone was and where they were living. Later the Dykstras moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., where he taught at the law school (my nephew had him). We had some family living in Ann Arbor at that time, and we visited them both once. We visited Mrs. Dykstra once after Mr. Dykstra had died. Dave (now deceased in 1995) and I graduated in 1942. We married in October 1943 (the Dykstras even sent us a small wedding gift). They were great! Lucelle (Lou) Howard-Hardman, BSS '42 |
