Donald Clippinger

Getting the chemistry right

The year was 1939; I had received a football scholarship to Ohio University. The scholarship gave me a job in the Lindley Hall kitchen and a chance to work weekends in Banks Ice Cream plant. The two jobs, plus football practice, made for some exhausting days. Some evenings I was too tired to study. As a result, my grades suffered.

Just before Christmas vacation, I received my chemistry grade, which was a "D-"! We would take our exam after we returned from Christmas vacation.

I took my chemistry book home with me, and with a resolve I had never known before, I studied eight hours a day for 10 days. When I received my test grade, it was a "B+."

Professor Donald Clippinger called me up to his desk, and he asked me how I was able to do this. I told him of my effort, and after some hesitation, he smiled and shook my hand.

Thereafter, he would wave and would go out of his way to say "hello." I felt that he was a real friend! In fact, the following year, when I won a starting position on the football team, he was one of the first to congratulate me.

I regret that I didn't get a chance to see him after my return from World War II. I note that one of the new buildings is named for him. He was fair, caring, a good teacher and in my case -- memorable.
