Waltraud Bald

A caring mentor

I am a 1995 graduate with a BSED degree in French and German education. During my years at Ohio University, I had the extreme pleasure to take courses taught by (German instructor) Waltraud Bald. As a teacher of German, I strive each day to be the kind of teacher that Frau Bald is. She does so much more than teach German to her students.

Her students learn German, but they also learn how to be more caring, compassionate and kind human beings. She possesses a love of teaching that goes beyond the language. She is someone who truly cares about her students as people, not just learners. She takes an active interest in her students and gets to know them personally as well as professionally.

Frau Bald lets her students see that there are professors at the university level who are real people and who truly enjoy being around and influencing other people in a positive manner. I had several professors over my years at OU, but Waltraud Bald is one of the few with whom I maintain contact.

I can say without a doubt that I have been influenced by Frau Bald, both personally as well as professionally. I hope to be as good a teacher and person as her. It was a pleasure to be in her classroom, and I am among the many students who consider her not just a great teacher, but also a friend.
