    Creating that margin of excellence

A demanding career has not deterred Jim Daley from giving his time and talent to Ohio University. Daley, BBA '63, is executive vice president and chief financial officer at EDS, an information technology services company with revenue last year of more than $21 billion. His move to EDS in 1999 marked the end of a 35-year career with Price Waterhouse, where he started right after graduation and rose to chief operating officer.

Jim DaleyYet during the busiest years of his career, Daley became a "professional volunteer" for his alma mater. He was active in the Third Century Campaign and now serves as co-chair of the Bicentennial Campaign, which seeks to raise more than $200 million by 2004.

Daley has been a trustee of The Ohio University Foundation since 1990 and in July will give up chairmanship of its board after five years in the post. Recently, he shared thoughts on his work with the foundation, which administers donations to the University, and on alumni volunteerism.

What do you view as the foundation's accomplishments during your tenure?
The increased representation of women and minorities on the foundation board is a source of personal pride, as is the growth in the foundation's endowment. It's been up around $220 million, which puts us in a different league than when I joined the board. The endowment was less than half that.

What's the most gratifying aspect of leading the foundation board?
The contribution the foundation will make to the University, in the form of earnings from its endowment, will be more than $11 million this coming fiscal year. The annual transfer of earnings from the endowment has become an important differentiator in the University's ability to provide a distinguished education.

Would you talk about your decision to establish an endowed professorship?
These endowments assist in attracting faculty who might not otherwise come to Ohio University. A motivated faculty member can provide the margin of excellence in instruction and perpetuate opportunities for students for many years to come.

What lessons learned at Ohio University have stayed with you?
I think most people think success is a function of intellect or luck. But the old saying about it being 90 percent perspiration and 10 percent inspiration is truer than most people realize. The people who make a real difference are the ones who figure out how to be effective in the environment they're in, to create change, to stimulate action, to motivate people, to lead.

What advice can you offer alumni who aspire to become volunteer leaders?
The University has a vitality all its own. It's hard to describe until you're actually there and can understand the difference institutions like the University and the foundation can make in people's lives. It all starts with making a commitment and becoming involved.
