FDNY official, survivor's sister express pride

As a 1973 graduate of OU and a chief with the New York City Fire Department, EMS Command, I read with great interest your coverage of the events of Sept. 11. While the events were the most devastating in New York City's history, the public support from all over the globe gave us great strength and renewed our faith in our fellow man.

Possessed with the (over)confidence that we can handle anything, New Yorkers are relatively incompetent at asking for assistance. But even without asking for it, help came in all forms: from children's posters and counseling services to fire trucks, immediately after the disaster and for months following. From the first day, no one in uniform could turn around without being offered something to drink or eat or a clean pair of socks (shifts frequently lasted well over 24 hours at the site).

If no one has yet thanked the 57 students from OU and OSU who volunteered their assistance, I would like to take the opportunity to do that now. We could not have survived without you. New York City is already well on its way toward physical recovery. Emotional recovery may take a while longer.

I received the winter 2002 Ohio Today and was touched by the articles of Ohio University's service to New York City in the aftermath of Sept. 11. I'm a 1978 OU grad and now live in Florida. My sister, Susan Donlan, was working on the 37th floor of One World Trade Center (North Tower). Yes, she survived, and we know how lucky we are to still have her. I'm proud to know that OU was there to help!

I graduated from the School of Interpersonal Communication in June 1997. Thanks for sending me the Ohio Today winter 2002 issue. I liked the issue and the remarks by President Robert Glidden in particular.

How strange this modern world is. The debris from the World Trade Center has been purchased by an Indian and will be used in construction work. We Indians continue to suffer at the hands of terrorists in Kashmir. We are not as mighty as Americans are. So far some 50,000 persons have died within the last 10 years. We have shown far greater patience than any other nation.

Nobody would understand the agony and pain Americans felt after the World Trade Center attack more than Indians.
