Updates from Ohio University alumni

1960s

Judith Levine Willis, BSJ ’63, published her fifth book, “Goddess Matters: the Mystical, Practical and Controversial,” under the name Judith Laura. Two of her books have received awards. In 2000 she retired from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, where she served as deputy director of communications, chief of editorial services and editor of FDA Consumer, the monthly magazine. She lives in Washington, D.C.

Richard Ragsdale, BBA ’65, received the 2011 Sage Award for community service from the Nashville (Tenn.) Council on Aging.

Charles Beshara, BSED ’66, MED ’68, is a retired educator, having served 30 years as a teacher, principal and school superintendent in Cuyahoga and Lorain counties. He and his wife, Linda, reside in Medina, Ohio.

Duncan McDonald, BSJ ’66, retired in June and was awarded professor emeritus status after 35 years of service at the University of Oregon, including the deanship of the school of journalism and communication. He and his wife, Jane, live in Eugene, Ore., where he serves as board chair of the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic.

Ginny Mavris-Starzak, AA ’66,
retired five years ago and moved to San Tan Valley, Ariz. She reports that she loves retirement but misses Ohio and her family.

Andrea Helman, BSJ ’68, has become a children’s book author after working in television. She has published eight books, four with photography by Art Wolfe. She lives in Seattle.

Kenneth Joseph, BSED ’68, retired in 2004 after teaching English to 8th through 12th grade students for 34 years. He resides in Martins Ferry, Ohio. He remembers his professors fondly, including Lauren Brown in the English department.

Lois Siegel, BSJ ’68, MA ’70, has been elected to the board of directors of The National Press Club of Canada Foundation. She resides in Ontario, Canada.

William Boone, BSIT ’69, retired after 41 years in industry and consulting, including projects for the Department of Defense involving the environment, renewable energy and sustainability. He lives in Springfield, Ohio.

David Keck, BSED ’69, MED ’71, presented “Reading Lincoln,” an annotated bibliography with lessons, at the National Council for the Social Studies annual meeting Dec. 2 in Washington, D.C. David was re-elected president of the village council of Johnstown, Ohio, and is a teacher at Twin Valley Behavioral Healthcare in Columbus. He and his wife, Rebecca, live in Johnstown.
